Children’s Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is not just about getting straighter, better-looking teeth, it’s also about the bite and chew of the teeth and this can also contribute to clear speech. The purpose of your child’s orthodontic treatment is to create a functional and healthy bite. This correction helps to promote better oral health for life. The fact that it also creates an attractive smile is a pleasant bonus.

It is becoming clearer that the NHS are strained. Sadly waiting times for children’s orthodontics in Manchester have become very high, with some patients having to wait from 6 months to two years or more. Demand for children’s orthodontic treatment is so high that some parents, who are frustrated with the seemingly endless waiting lists for NHS treatment, have been turning to private orthodontists such as Links Orthodontics.

Around a third of children will need orthodontic treatment. Sometimes orthodontic issues should be treated earlier but most issues are addressed from the ages of 12-13 years. Your dentist will be able to advise you when you’re ready for the treatment. If you have been informed by your dentist that you need treatment but don’t want to wait, you can visit Links Orthodontics in Manchester.

On their first appointment, the highly experienced and trained team will be able to put your child and you at ease. In a relaxed and professional environment, you will be listened to and make a full orthodontic assessment. Once the plan is agreed, your child will move onto active treatment.

Orthodontics

There are different orthodontic appliances used to straighten teeth, depending on what needs to be achieved.

Fixed Braces

The most common form of brace is the fixed brace, often referred to as ‘train tracks’. This involves brackets and wires being glued to the teeth and then pushed into place. Small elastic bands are used to hold the wires in place and can be a variety of colours. They are used for complex cases.

Removeable Braces

Removable appliances are used for more simple tooth movement. They comprise of an acrylic, custom-made plate which fits into the roof of the mouth. They can be taken out for cleaning and the teeth are moved gently with flexible wires.

Aligners

These are clear plastic moulds that are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth and gums. You will change the aligners every 2 weeks until the teeth have moved into the correct position. Invisalign is one of the most popular clear aligners on the market. The aligners are virtually invisible and convenient and can straighten teeth within months in some cases.

Functional Appliances

These are designed to correct the development of the bite and jaw to improve as you grow. The two main appliances used at Links Orthodontics are the Twin Block, which has two removable braces for the upper and lower teeth. This is used when a large percentage of adult teeth are through.

The Bionator is similar but made in one piece and is used for younger patients whose adult teeth are still not through. It can take a few weeks to get used to these but once used correctly, they can produce fantastic results!
